The largest and easternmost of the languages spoken by ethnic Circassians, Kabardian originated in the Kabardino-Balkaria Republic within the Russian Federation, centered on its capital of Nalchik. It is spoken by people of all ages and has official status in the Kabardino-Balkaria Republic.
